Move-in checklists
Protect your security deposit and start your tenancy on the right foot with these before, during, and after move-in steps.
Before you sign
- Confirm the exact unit number and floor plan match your application
- Ask for a blank copy of the lease and review every clause
- Verify who handles utilities, trash, water, and internet
- Get parking, storage, and pet agreements in writing
On move-in day, document everything
Walk through the unit with your phone and record a video or take time-stamped photos of every room, appliance, wall, floor, and fixture. Note any damage, dirt, or malfunction and email the list to your landlord the same day.
- Test every outlet, light switch, faucet, and appliance
- Check water pressure and hot water temperature
- Open and lock every window and door
- Look for pests, mold, or water stains
- Confirm smoke and carbon monoxide detectors work
Set up essentials
- Transfer utilities into your name before move-in
- Update your address with the post office, bank, and employer
- Get renters insurance — many leases require it
- Change or rekey locks if your lease allows it
- Find the breaker box, water shut-off valve, and trash days
Within the first week
Submit any maintenance issues in writing through the official channel, even if they seem small. A paper trail protects you if problems worsen or your landlord tries to deduct repairs from your deposit later.
